Dia de los Muertos

By Roxanna Lopez

dia de los muertos

Each year Tucson, Arizona puts on a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Ceremony that draws nearly 30,000 people from far and wide to honor and cremember those we have lost.

Since this year's ceremony was canceled due to Covid-19, Mirasol created its own Dia de los Muertos celebration. Clients processed grief as they created altars to honor their losses, celebrate life, and open up to new beginnings.

Clients and staff gathered for a mindful, sacred walk under the full moon with candles and altars. Drums kept beat to each step while some sang, some cried, and some held silence. The walk was not only lit by the beautiful blue moon of October, but by lanterns along the path and glow sticks hanging from trees. We ended in a circle around a fire and held a burn ceremony where each client and staff member was given the opportunity to honor their loss and celebrate life.

Those who have been lost to addictions, eating disorders, cancer, Covid-19, and more were honored on this night. Vulnerable tears, hopeful songs, sobs, laughter and dance was created by each individual bringing peace and beauty into a dark world of grief.

Prayer to the Elements

Written for Dia de los Muertos ceremony at Mirasol

By Audel Ladas

Tonight we look to the moon, and as the sun tells us how we shine, the moon describes our emotional nature. Invite the moonlight to wash over you and be a guide through the night.

Earth is the element of our planet. She grounds us and connects us, even through our trembling tears. Feel your feet on the ground and know that the earth is holding you.

Air is the element that connects all elements. The element of Air gives us room to breathe, widens our lungs, and with them, opens our Soul to personal freedom. Breathe deeply the night air allowing it to calm your soul.

Water is the element of constant movement, but slow and steady, swirling inside each of us and holding on to its mystery. This is the element of conception and death, of illusions and fairytales, holding the secret to our Soul — its beginning and its end.

Fire is energy and an element that shines. We engage with the fire tonight, inviting it to warm our hearts and remind us that we are alive.
